Can you believe it? The fantastic discoveries by the deep space Hubble Telescope reveal some 100 billion galaxies that make up our cosmos. Indeed, the universe is so big that it’s hard to comprehend. God is amazing, vast, incomprehensible, and immense. The enormity of the universe can make us feel small. Really small.
As a single mother, busy with life in the fast lane of work, kids, parenting, and housework, you may feel overlooked or lost by such discoveries. Do you ever wonder if your life matters? Do you wonder if God even knows you exist or sees you? The answer is an emphatic yes. In fact, not only does He see you, but there is a special way that this Cosmic Maker has designed you. You are unique, one of a kind, and essential in our world.
The more significant, more important question is whether you believe that to be true. We often see ourselves through our deficiencies, limitations, circumstances, and disabilities. Is it hard to accept the notion that God delights in you? God is personal. He is a person who knows you by name.
Knowing Him and why He has created you should be paramount if God is your Father and designer. What can you do to make the most of the season you're in right now? Here are a few suggestions...
- Celebrate every day that God knows you by name. Thank Him for your life, the purpose He has given you (even if you don't fully know it yet), and all the blessings He has put in your life.
- If you want to grow, develop, and contribute to the world around you, focus on your strengths and not your weaknesses. If you don’t know your strengths, ask people who know you well what they see your strengths to be!
- Ask your Father, the Great Designer of you, how He wants to use your gifts and unique design today. Then, prepare yourself to listen for His voice and obey. Don’t wait for the "not yet." Faithful stewardship of the little things is practice for following Him into the bigger things He has planned.
- Begin to think, pray and prepare bigger than your circumstances. Circumstances don’t get to define you unless you let them. If you know the specific plan you feel you were created for, how can you prepare for it by faith? Can you take a language class? Clean up your credit? Take a class online? Volunteer? Set some reachable goals this year to help you focus and develop for the now as well as for the "not yet."
- Don’t settle for anything less than what God has designed you to be. Who you are created to be will be your happy place because ultimately, God's plans are more fulfilling than our own.
- Enjoy the journey of every day. Start a thanksgiving journal and write down five things you are thankful for every day.
As vast as God is, He knows everything about you. There is no way you are forgotten. You are always on His mind. You are His image bearer, and you have great value, dignity, and purpose. If your life has not quite turned out as you had planned, remember that for most of us, it seldom does. I find women struggling everywhere, including me, because their lives turned out differently than they expected. This is real life. We come in all shapes and sizes. God takes delight in our diversity. The good news is that God has overcome that world, and He has chosen you for a partner. The plans for you are good, to grow and to flourish. Right now. Today.
