As many of you know, Hurricane Ida ravaged south Louisiana earlier this week as one of the most aggressive hurricanes to make landfall in the U..S., leaving many impacted families homeless or without basic necessities, such as food, water, electricity, and baby supplies. In fact, the remnants of Hurricane Ida have continued all the way up the eastern portion of the country. Many single mothers and children are hurting. Their homes are damaged and for many, recovery will be months away. As with our extensive efforts in COVID response and the Great Louisiana Flood of 2016, The Life of a Single Mom has been swift to action for these families, implementing three phases of recovery relief to hurting single moms and their children.
PHASE ONE
Phase I is underway now and includes emergency assessment for families to identify immediate needs, such as distribution of thousands of dollars in emergency financial aid to get supplies, food, and gas. Further support includes diaper distribution and other emergency items.

PHASE TWO
Phase II entails substantial support for home repairs, insurance deductibles, permanent housing solutions and addressing childcare needs, among other emergency care needs.

PHASE THREE
Phase III focuses on trauma care and recovery for moms across the area, including but not limited to case management, counseling, support groups, and additional life skills education.

The Life of a Single Mom is a national nonprofit headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The organization has served more than 627,000 moms over its ten year history, including launching 1699 single moms support groups in churches, hosting conferences, conducting boot camps, offering online life skills, and effective case management. Our COVID relief efforts have totaled more than $225,000 in direct assistance in the first 90 days of COVID recovery efforts.
