Creating A Clean Heart in 2020
In my early twenties, I recommitted my life to Christ and Psalms 51:10 became one of my favorite scriptures; “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right and steadfast spirit within me.” This became my favorite scripture after I grasped the revelation that my heart condition could have a significant impact on my ability to walk in the fullness of God’s promises; I had a master cleanse of the heart. As I allowed Father God to create my clean heart, I had the responsibility of keeping it clean; keeping it clean meant letting go of fear, doubt, bitterness, and forgiveness (of others, and myself). I found it necessary to be intentional in my thoughts as well as my words. Pure thoughts and a clean heart go together, and according to scripture, “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”
Amid my most challenging seasons as a single parent, it was the promises of Father God hidden in my heart that infused me with hope. As I renewed my mind with scriptures and songs of praise, the heaviness of my situation was lifted; I exchanged my garment of heaviness for a garment of praise. Learning to shift my focus from my problems to God’s promises changed the trajectory of my life. The ability to see and receive the abundant life of love, peace, joy, and provision was a part of my benefits package as a believer, but my heart health had a significant role. Matthew 5:8 says, “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.” This verse helped remove the scales from my eyes and my heart.

About 15+ years ago, Capital One released the “what’s in your wallet” commercial. One of the clips showed a family leaving home for a holiday vacation, and just beyond the front door, they hit a glass wall blocking their forward progress. The glass barrier implied that they could see the limitless possibilities ahead, but without having access to “Capital One MC”, reaching their desired destination would be far-fetched. The message suggests that one’s destination could be determined by the card carried in their wallet.
As I sat and pondered the implied message behind the commercial, I perceived that the same could be true regarding what’s in our hearts. As hard as it was, I found it so important to stand in the mirror and ask myself this question, “what’s in your heart? Was the estimated time of arrival to my divine destiny prolonged due to my circumstances or my heart condition? While navigating from trauma to triumph, I learned that a heart carrying anything other than the Word and promises of God could create barriers between me and God’s best for me; I also realized that the negativity that had taken up residence in my heart had to be evicted. Coming to grips with that revelation was a major part of my “heart cleanses.” When I decided to let go of the pain of my past and live forward, my life changed. I started seeing myself the way God sees me and not according to the situations surrounding me. Renewing my mind with the word of God and standing on his promises cleaned my heart and transformed my life. That was the start of my Master Cleanse.
With that being said, let’s begin 2020 releasing the old and embracing the new. Infuse your heart with cleansing scriptures. Psalms 119:50 says, “When my heart is overwhelmed it is the promises of God that resuscitates me.” Psalms 145:13 says, “The Lord always keeps his promises.” His promises must be planted in our hearts so that when the enemy brings up our misfortunes, and throws barriers and roadblocks in our path, out of the abundance of our hearts our mouth will speak victory. When our heart is full of God’s promises, our conversations will be filled with what HE says as opposed to what we see. So, let the 2020 Master Cleanse begin; the possibilities ahead of you are limitless.
