Expecting A Miracle
It has been a tough year for so many people, but it has been especially difficult for the single mom. This has been a year of job losses, financial hardships, child care issues, homeschooling, etc. Change has become second nature to us. These are uncertain times, and it would be unusual if we didn’t have some anxiety about what the future holds for us and our kids. I know that it may be hard to believe that miracles do still happen, but they do.
Maybe you feel that God has left you. Maybe you feel that this world has gone crazy, and God has somehow disappeared. It’s not so. God has not left you. He is still here, and He is still performing miracles. In my 20 years as a single mom, God has performed many miracles on my behalf. To encourage you, I want to share a few of those miracles with you:

Emergency Mechanic- In 2011, my three daughters (16,15 and 13) and I had taken a road trip about an hour away from home. We live in rural Indiana, where houses on highways can be few and far between. We were in the middle of nowhere when my daughter’s truck started to overheat. We knew that it would not make it much farther, and we needed help. I immediately started to pray. Up the road, we noticed a dirt road that had a couple of houses on it. We passed the first house and turned into the drive of the second house instead. As we drove back to a large barn, two young men in there 20’s approached. We explained our problem, and they immediately discovered that the seal on the radiator cap was warped. While the one guy cooled our engine down and refilled the radiator, the other guy came back with a radiator cap that happened to be a perfect fit. He said, “You know, I just picked this up at Auto Zone yesterday. We don’t use this size, but I just felt like I needed to buy it.” God had already set up a rescue plan.
Healed Shoulder- In February of this year, I had an MRI that showed a torn rotator cuff in my left shoulder. I prayed occasionally for healing. In July, I had another MRI, and the tear is gone! It is not 100% yet, but most of the pain is gone, and I am able to use it more. God heals when we believe.
Quad Accident- My youngest son was in a quad accident in 2017, when he was 15 years old. It was one of the larger quads, and he is a skinny, little guy. While the quad landed on the driver and broke his collarbone, my son was thrown clear and only suffered from a scrape on his leg. He said later that he felt like he had been carried. Had the quad landed on him, he could have been seriously hurt. I pray continually for my kid’s protection. That event led to a discussion about guardian angels and answered prayers.
Clothes- I rarely had to buy clothes when the kids were growing up. God heard my cries for provision, and every time one of the kids would start needing clothes, someone would give us clothes for that particular child and usually the others too. I would even come home to trash bags of clothes that were left on the porch for a child who had grown out of theirs. I never found out who left the clothes, but I knew who had led them there. Providing clothes for five growing kids was expensive. God knew that, and He worked in the hearts of people.
I offer this testimony to encourage you to keep praying and have faith that God is still in the miracle-making business. I challenge you to reflect on your life and see if you can see where God has worked a miracle. Miracles are not always grand gestures. God has often orchestrated events or situations in my life to relieve me of anxiety or stress. He does this because He loves us and wants to help us. Where has God worked on your behalf to lessen some of the anxiety or stress in your life? What you thought was coincidence was probably God. Keep praying. Keep the faith. Miracles happen every day for those who still expect them.
