As the new school year approaches, it's common for single mommas to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety. The responsibility of juggling parenthood, work, and school commitments can be overwhelming. Questions flood our thoughts. Such as, “What will the new school year bring for us? Will my kids have better opportunities? Will they make the sports team? Will they flourish academically? Will they gain good friends?”
For single moms, this time can be filled with mixed emotions, especially if you're facing it alone. But fear not! You are strong, capable, and have everything it takes to make this year a success for both you and your children. Most importantly, God is with you and He will never forsake you. In this article, we will explore some practical tips to help you navigate the upcoming school year with confidence and ease and offer encouragement, tips, and a guiding scripture to help you begin the new school year with peace.
#1 | plan ahead & stay organized
Preparation is key to navigating the upcoming school year successfully. Creating a centralized family calendar can be a game-changer. Use it to track school schedules, extracurricular activities, appointments, work commitments, and any personal time you need. Having a visual representation of your family's schedule will help you manage time efficiently and avoid unnecessary stress. Utilize organizational tools, like planners or smartphone apps, to stay on top of important dates, events, and deadlines. By planning ahead, you'll be able to maintain a balance between work and family time.
#2 | Build a supportive community
Reach out to other single moms and lean on your support system. Even though you might be navigating the school year as a single mom, remember that you are not alone. Reach out to friends, family, or other single parents who can offer support, have insight on community resources, share responsibilities, take turns carpooling, or can simply lend a listening ear when needed. Building a strong support system can ease anxieties and provide a sense of community during this journey. Connecting with like-minded individuals can provide you with valuable insights, encouragement, and a sense of camaraderie.
#3 | communicate with teachers
Open communication with your children's teachers can help create a supportive environment for your child's education. Let them know about your family situation and any specific needs your child may have. Ask for resources to help support you and your kids throughout the school year. Teachers are often in the loop with community partners in your area. Working together as a team can lead to a positive school experience.
#4 | write out goals for the school year
Prior to the first week of school, sit down with your children and ask them what they want to do over the next year (don’t forget about your goals!). Together, create realistic goals that they want to accomplish. Help them write these goals on a poster board so they can place in their room or in the kitchen as a constant reminder of what they want to accomplish. Use Pinterest as inspiration to make it fun and interactive! Help them think of ways to achieve these goals during the year. Then, offer a small reward for achieving the goal, such as movie night, special trip to the park, or their favorite snack!
#5 | Set aside intentional time
Amidst the busyness of the school year, try to find time for yourself. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup. Take moments each day to care for yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Intentionally, set aside time for prayer, and find time throughout the day to commit to exercise, power naps, or engaging in hobbies you love. Nurturing yourself will recharge your soul and enable you to be a better mom.
Scripture of Encouragement to Guide You This season:
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Let this empowering scripture serve as a constant reminder that you are not alone in this journey. Have faith in your abilities and trust that God's presence will accompany you every step of the way. Draw strength from His words and embrace the challenges with courage, knowing that you are capable of overcoming anything that comes your way.
Single mommas, as the new school year approaches, may you face it with a heart full of confidence and hope. Embrace your strengths, lean on your support system, plan ahead, and prioritize intentional time for yourself. Remember, you are not alone, and with faith and determination, you can make this year a fulfilling and successful one for you and your children. Allow God’s word to be your source of encouragement and assurance as you embark on this beautiful journey of growth and learning together. This year holds incredible possibilities for growth, learning, and beautiful memories with your children. May the grace of God guide you every step of the way. You've got this!
