"Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon they ways.”

Job 22:28

You may ask, “What is the significance of decreeing and declaring the word of God over your children as a single mom?” I am glad you asked.

There is no true power in our words alone, but when we decree and declare in the earth what God has already spoken to be the will for our lives it brings forth much fruit.

I am the mother of three amazing young men who are all grown and making their own path in life. As a newly single mom though, I knew I was taking on a daunting task of having to raise three boys on my own. I didn’t know what to expect to be honest.

However, there was one thing I knew for sure. I knew I needed something bigger than me. I knew I needed something outside of myself. I needed that God which my old grandmother talked about. I knew I needed that God which she bragged about. I wanted to experience God in a deeper way because I knew I would need strength to overcome the many obstacles of raising children solo.

I knew that, one day, my sons would become heads of households, and as a parent I felt my duty was to establish a Christian foundation. I knew they would not be perfect and life would hand them their own set of challenges. Therefore, I had a strong desire to introduce them to the one and only true God who would and could give them an eternal perspective.  I began to decree and declare the word of God over their lives when they were a very young age. Ultimately, our children have free will to choose, but as parents we are to guide our children into what is eternally best for them. (Proverbs 22:6)

As believers, we have the right to decree and declare what God has already spoken in His Word. When we proclaim the promises of God over our children, we are not just whispering sweet nothings to them. We are speaking words of life, transformation and future breakthroughs.

Many times, as believers, we do not use all the tools and weapons that our Mighty God has afforded us. As single moms, I believe one of the greatest things we can do for our children is to decree and declare what the Lord has spoken over their lives.

When single moms begin to decree and declare God’s word over their children, the statistics of fatherless homes begin to lose their power. There are many benefits to proclaiming God’s word. Here are a few:

It helps to shift our focus.

It spiritually aids in renewing the mind about new possibilities.

It sets an environment of hope in any circumstance.

It establishes God’s will in the earth.

It activates the power of God’s word.

Decreeing and Declaring

HELPS SHIFT OUR FOCUS

"God does exceedingly abundantly above all that I could ask or think according to His power that works in me."

Ephesians 3:20

After my divorce, it hit me that I was going to be a single parent with not one, not two, but three young boys. Once reality set in, I began to ask God to lead and guide me in the process. Many years later, I can truly say God did just that. I can see his footprints in every season of my life. There I was broken with what society calls a broken family. But God is a restorer. I had heard the testimonies of others telling of the goodness of God and how he had done miraculous things in their lives. I believed if God could do it for others, He surely would do it for me. I began to speak the word of God over my sons and our household. I knew that an All Powerful God could take our family from brokenness to wholeness, and He can and will do the same for you and your children.

Decreeing and Declaring

Creates new mindsets

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

Romans 12:2

When I first read the statistics of fatherless homes reported in the U.S. Census Bureau, I felt helpless. Then something rose up in me and reminded me of what God said in his word. Yes, I was a single mom with three sons in a scary world even back then. At that moment, I chose to trust God at His Word. I chose to speak what He had spoken and not what I saw. I saw nothing but mountains of despair in that census report that day, but I chose to believe the God who created the mountains. I realized there would be challenges ahead of me, but I decided to seek the will of God for my children and my family. I chose to decree and declare what God had already said in His Word and established for our future. Ask God to help you renew your mind daily and give you a boldness to speak to the mountain.

Decreeing and Declaring

Creates An environment of hope

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Jeremiah 29:11

As a single mom there were many times when I internally questioned if what I was experiencing was part of God’s plan. There were seasons in single parenthood where I felt those fatherless household statistics closing in on me. The struggle was real, but God’s grace and mercy is truth. I found that my strength was in the pages of the Bible. The more I tapped into the presence of God, the more hopeful I would get. The more I realized that God’s plan for me and my children was bigger than the season I was in, the stronger I became. The plans God has for every single mom and their family is of good, of a future and a hope. Decree and declare today that your future is bright and the plans God has for you and your family are great.

Decreeing and Declaring

Establishes the will of god

"For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure."

Philippians 2:13

We are all here for a purpose. Every child, no matter the household dynamic, is here for a specific purpose. Every parent, every mother is here on assignment. When we decree and declare the word of God, His will is established in our lives. It establishes the will of God for our children. It establishes our world view and how we see life. It establishes God’s desire for us and all of humanity. “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven.” As a single mom, we can decree and declare our future to look like what God has established for us and our children. As we proclaim the word of God and walk out his plan for our lives, His will is established. It doesn’t matter where you are in life, it is God’s good pleasure for us to allow Him to work His will through us. Decree and Declare God’s will to be done in your life.

Decreeing and Declaring

Activates God's Power

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Hebrews 4:12

As parents our voice and words carry weight and substance. However, it is the word of God which breaks barriers. It is the word of God that breaks generational curses. It is the will of God which will prevail. As single moms, when we decree and declare the word and will of God, we activate it to work in our lives and the lives of our children. Therefore statistical facts become rendered powerless when we proclaim God’s word and will through our faith in Jesus Christ.
