Behave in ways congruent with who you are in Christ. It can be quite a challenge to realign yourself from the narrative that our society has labeled you to be. Where does one really start in the process of changing her story? As a wellness expert in the single mom community, it is my joy to empower single moms with the tools and strategies they need to have a holistic transformation to reclaim their life of abundance.
As I embarked upon my own journey of becoming more congruent with who I am in Christ, I had to understand the definition or meaning of congruence in behavior and mindset, sit down, and map out what that looked like for me. Congruency is when a person acts in direct accordance with their dreams. Most dreams are not prophetic, but they are still placed on your heart by God. Acting in direct accordance with your dreams requires a confident attitude toward God, involving commitment to His will for your life. One who behaves in ways congruent with who they want to be doesn't let the circumstance or thoughts of others affect their approach to living out their dreams. A more simplified definition of congruency is “being on the same page” with someone else, or, in this particular case, your dreams.
Listen to what Jesus has to say about behavior congruency in to Matthew 12:25-26:
Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?”
Living a congruent lifestyle not only makes for a healthier home, but it makes for a healthier individual. One who is living in harmony with their emotions, mind, body, spirit, and finances! When you behave congruently, there is no need for a mask or for pretense. In order to achieve or master congruency (doesn’t that have a nice ring? To master congruency!), when I mentor single mothers, we learn the art of Eating the Elephant. Believe me, it can get a bit overwhelming when you look at areas of your life as whole instead of breaking it down into segments and tackling one area at a time. The first step to behaving in ways congruent with who you want to be is breaking limit beliefs. Ask yourself these two transformative questions as you break free from rigid thoughts and embrace a more flexible mindset:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me…” - John 10:27
