Jessica Everett of Gulfport, Mississippi has been named the 2017 National Single Mom of the Year by The Life of a Single Mom. The judging committee was comprised of business professionals and single moms from the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area.
Baton Rouge, LA August 21, 2017 – Jessica Everett, single mom of two in Gulfport, Mississippi received the surprise of a lifetime when she answered the phone. Jennifer Maggio, Chief Executive Officer of The Life of a Single Mom, was on the other end congratulating Everett on winning the 2017 National Single Mom of the Year Award. Everett’s close friend nominated her for the national award earlier in the year, but she never dreamed she would actually win.
“I’m stunned.” said Everett. The National Single Mom of the Year contest launched in June 2014 to recognize single mothers for the hard work they invest each day. Criteria included examples of courage and character, as well as a commitment to Christ. Award package includes an all-expense paid trip to Baton Rouge, an awards ceremony to be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Healing Place Church, $500 cash, a makeover, photo shoot, and various prizes.
As the organization’s founder and CEO, Maggio says, “It is a privilege to work with single mothers, such as Jessica, to see them overcome life’s obstacles.” Everett’s entry detailed that she has been in the Navy for 16 years and has completed her B.S. in Criminal Justice and A.S. in Paralegal Studies. It further detailed that she has received the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, as well as the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal. She was also recently nominated for the Senior Sailor of the Quarter for her battalion. As a single mom, being away from her children on Active Duty has been particularly hard.
The Top 5 National Finalists for the 2017 National Single Mom of the Year Award include Sarah Sims Bass of Hattisburg, Mississippi; Lisa Marie Venancio of St. Augustine, Florida; Ryan Clemons of Moss Bluff, Louisiana, and Dzonrial McCrary of Warner Robins, Georgia – all of which received a prize package via mail and an official award certificate.
