On November 3, 2016, due to a generous donation from Taylor Swift, The Life of a Single Mom (TLSM) gave away brand new side-by-side refrigerators to 10 single moms impacted by the Great Louisiana Flood of 2016. Through an open application process, single mothers were invited to apply for the gift. Upon selection, each mom was notified and scheduled for a day-long celebration. The celebration commenced with a complimentary makeup and styling session at Vanguard College of Cosmetology. The mothers were then escorted to TLSM headquarters were they were served a meal prepared by Chef Don Bergeron. Mothers were given new purses filled with toiletries, make-up, and other items donated by Quota International of Baton Rouge. They were also awarded a gift card to purchase groceries, a new Crock Pot slow cooker, and a cookbook.
The afternoon concluded with a visit to Sherwood Appliances, where each mother picked out a brand new refrigerator in her choice of styles.
The August flood displaced an estimated 100,000 people in the southeast Louisiana region leaving billions of dollars of damage in its wake.
“We are so grateful to Taylor Swift and other partners for their generosity and compassion for single moms in the Greater Baton Rouge area,” said Jennifer Maggio, Chief Executive Officer of TLSM. She further stated that it was an honor to be chosen by Ms. Swift and that the partnership of many local and national businesses and individuals has allowed the organization to serve more than 1,100 flood victims in the last 90 days.
